Work out a percentage of a number, express one number as a share of another, or measure the change between two values. Calculate an increase or a decrease

The change between two values is the difference divided by the starting value, times 100. Going from 80 to 100 is an increase of 25%, but coming back from 100 to 80 is a decrease of 20%: the reference changes, so the two percentages differ. The coefficient says the same thing as a multiplier, 1.25 one way and 0.8 the other.

Calculate a sale price

In Percent of a number, the Total − x% line gives the price after a discount. Successive discounts do not add up: 20% off then another 10% off is a 28% discount overall, not 30%, because the second one applies to the already reduced price.

Add VAT to a price

The Total + x% line turns a price before tax into a price including tax: the amount before tax multiplied by one plus the rate divided by 100. The rate is free, so the same calculation works for any country and for any reduced rate.
