Rename a file with a clean, portable filename

Prepare documents, images and other files with consistent names. The file renamer converts supported accents, replaces spaces and suggests a filename suited to common Windows, macOS and Linux workflows. Review the name before downloading a copy.

How to rename your file

Choose a file or drag it into the drop area. Select hyphens or underscores and review the suggested name. You can edit the name before downloading. Recognized extensions, including common compound extensions such as .tar.gz, stay separate from the editable name.

Filename compatibility rules

Names use letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. Replace accents produces ASCII names by default; disabling it preserves Unicode letters. The tool avoids reserved Windows names such as CON and NUL, rejects unsafe manual edits and limits the full filename to 180 UTF-8 bytes. If the original name has no supported letters or numbers, a fallback name is suggested. Keep extension is enabled by default and can be turned off when needed.

What changes when you download

Only the suggested download name changes: the file contents stay identical and the original file remains in place. The browser controls the save location and may adjust duplicate names. Compatibility also depends on the full destination path and the filesystem; permissions and filesystem timestamps are not preserved by a normal browser download.
